Located in Cochecton, New York, along the Delaware River, our farmland was initially claimed by the first settlers who arrived in the area sometime in the 1750s. After the Revolutionary War, Nathan Mitchell and his family established themselves on the land as farmers.
In the years that followed, Alice and Neil Fitzgerald of River Brook Farm took over the land and established an organic farm. Today, the land is under the name Butchie’s Organic Farms, where we offer a variety of fresh, organic vegetables and meats.
How Our Farm Started
Our Mission
Our mission is to offer healthy food, support local agriculture, and create a connection between people and where their food comes from. Recognized as a Certified Organic (NOFA-NY) and Certified Naturally Grown farm, we follow organic and humane practices for all our produce. Our methods and materials strive to have minimal impact on the environment, incorporating ‘biodiversity’ in our farming practices.
Picture yourself in a place where animals wander in and out of their homes as they please, traveling across the land at their leisure, eating fresh produce, bugs, and grasses, and breathing in the fresh air. After spending a day working on a project – with the goal of creating a world of healthy produce and meats – you see these animals run and greet you, following you to the Delaware River on your way to an afternoon swim or a quick canoe trip. If this looks like something you’ll enjoy doing, an internship at Butchie’s Organic Farm is waiting for you.
Farm Interns
Internship Offer
Our interns work on the farm, experiencing the many facets of our diverse organic operation. For example, the job may involve going to one or more farmers’ markets or deliveries during the week. This will naturally mean getting up early (before the roosters crow). At other times, our intern may spend the day harvesting, washing, packing, and organizing produce; weeding; taking care of animals; writing the weekly email blast; planting seeds; and working on other special farm projects.
This is not an internship for someone who does not enjoy getting a little dirty. It can also get hot during the day, but we can always cool down in the Delaware River that runs along the farm.
